"Wanderlust is the vehicle and curiousity the engine that drive my search for understanding and connection." LP / ROAM

ROAM is a musical and philosophical journey written by a globetrotter with Roma blood. Traveling people share ideas, instruments, stories and modes and Lisa Patterson has created an album that has furthered her mission to bring globally diverse influences to contemporary songwriting. Pursuing international collaborations, the first single NEED EACH OTHER features an appearance by South Indian vocalist Bonnie Chakraborty, recorded in Chennai, South India at Bodhi Music Studios. www.bodhimuzzik.com

Enthusiastic response to ROAM's first single in the Netherlands led to a distribution deal with Rough Trade / BMG for the Benelux. In Canada, ROAM is distributed by Festival Distribution. www.festival.bc.ca

Lyrically, Lisa's writing is poetic and reflective. In the short opening cinematic piece, ROAMING, she writes of having helpful guides along the path but learning to trust her own radar. In FORWARD she suggests moving through old attitudes towards a more hopeful future and in SAY GOODBYE, which was written for her mom, Lisa searches for an understanding of mortality. She recognises holding a shared vision for the world with her lover in THROUGH YOUR EYES, and in both LEAVE NO STONE UNTURNED and GIVE & TAKE, she uses metaphors of nature to reflect on our emotional lives. Lisa strives to practise what she preaches in STILL WITHIN ACTIVITY and has written a beautifully simple anti-racism cry AND THE STARS KEEP ON SHINING. Her personal favorite song on ROAM is LIKE GRAVITY, which is a good summation of her attempt to control her wanderlust.

Sonically, ROAM is piano driven. Lisa's Cellist of eight years, Alex McMaster is featured in the many roles and ranges you might expect a guitar to cover. Middle Eastern Doumbek, North Indian Tabla & Dhol interplay with Drum kit and programming. Haunting Arabic flute is featured on the driving SAY IT OUT LOUD and icon Noam Chomsky and CBC's Bob MaDonald permitted the use of sampled words on track 14, AND THE STARS KEEP ON SHINING. There are tracks with densely layered arrangements (#2; #6; #8) and songs with bare intimacy, featuring voice alone with Cello or Piano (#7; #9). Lisa took the opportunity to play more alto sax on ROAM than on her first album, THIS IS WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE, playing on 5 tracks. A highlight is track 10 LEAVE NO STONE UNTURNED which features improvised live - off - the - floor trading off between Lisa and Cellist Alex, further energised by Adam on bass) and Rakesh on percussion.

Engineered and Co-Produced by Juno Engineering Nominee Adam Messinger (Pavlo, Nasri, Cadence, the Nylons), ROAM is a successful marriage of the band playing live-off-the floor and virtual studio technology. Between takes, the band recorded free improvisations (one is now a hidden track under a Rumi poem: end of#4).
