" a perfect balance of worldly sounds, musical
finesse and passion "

- F. WALL, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR,
EDGE OF THE WORLD FESTIVAL, HADAI GWAII, BC

ROAM is a spirited new contemporary roots music unit that has emerged from a ten-year musical relationship between Lisa Patterson (vocals, piano, alto sax) and Alex McMaster (vocals, cello, clarinet).

ROAM's blend of soaring vocal poetry and surprising instrumental texture integrates both improvisational and global music influences into contemporary songwriting. Alex and Lisa gather inspiration from their diverse music and life experiences across four continents, and have been sharing their vision of personal, social and global consciousness with audiences in Europe, India and their home base of Canada.

Believers in cross-cultural collaborations, ROAM have performed and recorded with artists Maryem Tollar (maryemtollar.com), Lache Cercel (lachecercel.com), Cassius Khan (cassiuskhan.impendo.com) and Anita Katakkar of the Toronto Tabla Ensemble (rakkatak.com). Upcoming collaborations include with multi-instrumentalist / producer Paul Jacob in South India (bodhimuzzik.com). ROAM will be releasing their premiere album in Spring of 2008 and will be touring extensively in support of the release.

Alex McMaster is a classically trained cellist who was born in Ottawa and grew up in South Africa, Bangladesh and the U.K. She has toured and recorded with Jane Siberry, Feist, A Northern Chorus, Sean Cullen, Jacksoul, Oh Susanna and Lily Frost. Alex is an accomplished string arranger and orchestrator, including scoring a project for the Orlando Philharmonic. She is also bilingual and a certified French translator.

Lisa Patterson, familiar to Canadian and international audiences as a solo artist, originally hails from British Columbia where she grew up experiencing the dancing and singing of her Romanian and Scottish heritage. Lisa's second commercial release, ROAM, from which this duo takes its' name, is distributed in Canada by Festival Distribution and was released in Europe in 2005 by Rough Trade Records. Need Each Other, a single from that CD, remained at the #3 spot on European charts for 16 weeks.

Lisa is also an engineer and producer, recording the award-winning debut album for roots artist Melissa Laveaux, who recently signed with Paris-based label No Format for a re-release. She has also recorded albums for award-winning aboriginal artist Brenda MacIntyre, Jazz diva Rita DiGhent and the Toronto Tabla Ensemble.

Alex and Lisa share more than music. They are longtime friends who share the belief in taking care of our planet, each other, and ourselves. They participate in the well-being of community through volunteer and contract work with immigrant women and at-risk youth, and work privately with young musicians and songwriters. The company musician for improvising storytellers Toronto Playback Theatre, Lisa is also TPT coordinator for community arts outreach to shelters and youth groups.
