Lisa Patterson is a contemporary roots recording and performing artist who brings the influences of her Celt and Roma blood and global travels to her writing, singing, piano and alto sax playing. She has released one EP & two full-length albums, most recently ROAM, which is distributed in Canada by Festival Distribution and in the Benelux by Roughtrade/BMG. Her two videos, both reached #1 on Bravo! Television's Top 10 videos and her compositions have been used in 2 features, 2 shorts and 2 documentaries. Lisa has performed on club and festival stages in Canada, Holland, South India and the Middle East and aspires to promote understanding and global consciousness through her music.

Before stepping out as a solo artist in 1998, Lisa toured as a side person for many Canadian original music artists across North America and Mexico, the highlight being a bizarre jam with Harry Dean Stanton in L.A.! Early studies as a youth in Classical and Big Band music was followed by training in South Indian music, Contemporary Improvisation and Jazz Composition. Akin to a renaissance artist, Lisa also is the improvising composer with Toronto Playback Theatre; facilitates various workshops; records and produces other artists and is committed to her arts based work with youth.

"Unique, masterful music (you can quote that!). Your skills are top notch. And you lose yourself in the music, which is inviting and engaging and sexy. Talent always is" Virgil Scott - Producer of David Clayton Thomas

"Why don't we save the Earth?" sings precocious 12-year-old Mitchell Allen, sounding like the next Randy Newman, albeit a less cynical one. Mitchell is one of five songwriters aged 16 and under sharing the stage at Hugh's Room on the evening of June 29 as part of a Youth Express! event organized by singer-songwriter Lisa Patterson. 5 STAR REVIEW ROAM

This is all mixed up but Patterson makes it all make sense. Originally from Vancouver, now living in Toronto, her bio stresses a family upbringing with Scottish and Romanian roots. Sure enough, Patterson's second album has gypsy and celtic elements but there also is jazz and the faint influence of drums 'n' bass. MORE

GUELPH UNIVERSITY ONTARIAN

The first impression that comes from this album is its uniqueness. This almost seamless blend of jazz and what seems like Indian or Eastern European music is very intriguing. I couldn't help but tap my foot and sing along upon my first listen. The melodies are interesting and intricate and are well balanced by the lively percussion and fluid instrumental backgrounds. LYRICS, and the messages they convey, are extremely important in Lisa Patterson's scheme of things.

Her new album Roam is full of a global esthetic that brings together many different sources. While she wants her songs to be heard by as many people as possible she says there is much more at stake. "The philosophy that I'm trying to spread is 'let's take the time to try and understand each other. Let's try to connect with each other because our world is a really funny place.' MORE
